About

Piney Woods Wildlife Society was a 501(c)(3) non-profit group of bird and nature lovers that met monthly to hear a program about a bird or nature topic.  This society began in 1981 and was disbanded in January of 2024.

Kathy Coward shared the news with the membership in the January 2024 newsletter by saying:  “It is with great sadness I advise you that the Piney Woods Wildlife Society has had to dissolve our group. At our January 9th board meeting, the board voted to dissolve as we have not been able to obtain new leadership. We have had a great run since 1981 but I know the spirit of the group will go on within all of us.  The board has decided to divide our remaining funds among two worthy charitable organizations — 60% to “Friends of Texas Wildlife” and 40% to “Volunteers at Jesse Jones Park”.

The Society’s goals were to encourage the protection of wildlife and their habitats, both flora and fauna; to learn about the earth’s ecosystems and to practice and promote responsible use of these natural resources; to appreciate, through actual field study, the benefits derived from nature; and to engage in projects that will further the preservation of native plants, animals and avifauna.

The Piney Woods Wildlife Society was founded in October 1981 as a student club of the North Harris County Community College.  The College was, and is, supportive of the Society, but requested that the Society server financial ties to the College.  In May 1991, the Society voted to incorporate and the Internal Revenue Service granted a 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in November 1992.
